JOTTUM WINTER COLLECTION 2009
with both feet on Dutch soil and floating in endless imagination
No one knows more about the requirements that a children's collection has to fulfill than the driving force behind Jottum, and mother of six children, Anky Groothof. For the winter collection 2009, she once again sought and found the perfect mix between spiritual and earthly, and between transparent and theatrical. "Jottum really comes from within me. I mix all the ingredients together and I keep getting a new, unique dish."
Buttons play a special role in the winter collection 2009. Anky: "I have incorporated buttons in fabric designs and a number of buttons from that design - some of which are works of art in their own right - have been used functionally in the clothing." The button has been a signature feature since Jottum began. There is a button on every piece of clothing. Only few people know about the history behind this, but it's nice to tell in the year in which the button is used as a theme.
The use of the logo button is inspired by the seal that that was used as a trademark for textile designs during the Bauhaus period. The Bauhaus was an internationally known school for graphic designers, craftsmen and architects that operated in Germany from 1919 to 1932. I translated that signature feature into a logo button for Jottum, and Anky had her reasons for doing so. "My grandmother always used to let me remove all of the pretty buttons from old clothing and my father, who was a furniture maker, also gave me the most beautiful buttons. That's how my button collection began. An entire story and wonderful memories can be lurking behind a button."
The collection that incorporates the button is a creative tour de force, and of the same level as the famous Rembrandt collection from a few years ago. Jottum is also presenting a beautiful basic collection that feels very familiar. Anky knows only too well how to imprint her own mark on her collection, while not losing sight of renewal for one second. Her collection subtly expresses simplicity and tranquility, without detracting from its sumptuous appearance. The collection has been designed in traditional Jottum colours, such as deep dark navy and pastel blue, with the addition of a new colour here and there; in this winter collection, that's black and the derivative colours of black.
Jottum winter 2009: A beautiful collection for girls and boys. With both feet on Dutch soil and floating in endless imagination. Anky: "That combination of earthly and spiritual appeals to me greatly. That's who I am, and that's what Jottum is too."
